Pet-Friendly Artificial Turf in Fresno & Clovis
Pet-friendly artificial turf installation in Fresno & Clovis — drainage-built synthetic lawns that hold up to dogs, heat, and Central Valley summers.

Pet-Friendly Artificial Turf in Fresno & Clovis
If your dogs have turned the backyard into a patchwork of brown spots, dug-up trenches, and muddy paw prints tracked across the kitchen, you’re not alone — it’s one of the most common calls we get in Fresno and Clovis. Pet-friendly artificial turf solves it: no urine burn, no digging craters, no mud, and a clean green lawn that handles 105°F summers without irrigation. Longhorn Landscapes installs pet-rated synthetic turf systems built for Central Valley heat and real dogs, with proper drainage and odor control from the base up.
What pet-friendly artificial turf involves
Pet-friendly turf isn’t just regular synthetic grass with a different label. The whole system is built differently. We start by removing the existing lawn and excavating 3–4 inches of soil so the finished turf sits flush with hardscape and walkways. Next we install a compacted base of Class II road base or decomposed granite, screed flat and rolled to a firm, draining surface — critical for keeping urine moving through instead of pooling.
The turf itself is a pet-rated product with a 100% permeable backing (often called flow-through or hole-punched backing) so liquid drains straight through at roughly 30+ inches per hour rather than running off. Pile heights typically run 1.5″ to 1.75″ for backyards with dogs — short enough to rinse clean, tall enough to look like a real lawn. We seam panels with outdoor seam tape and adhesive, nail the perimeter every 4–6 inches into the base, and finish with a zeolite or antimicrobial infill that traps ammonia from urine and neutralizes odor. A final power broom stands the blades up, and the lawn is ready to use the same day.
Why Longhorn Landscapes for pet-friendly turf
- Local Fresno & Clovis installers — we know how Central Valley heat, hard-pan soil, and alkaline irrigation water affect base prep and drainage
- Pet-rated turf only on dog projects: permeable backings and antimicrobial zeolite infill, not generic landscape turf with sand
- Proper 3–4″ compacted base — we don’t shortcut the sub-base, which is the #1 reason cheap turf jobs smell after a year
- Clean perimeter details against concrete patios, paver edges, and retaining walls (we build all of these in-house)
- Written workmanship warranty on the install and the manufacturer’s warranty on the turf itself
- Free on-site quotes across Fresno, Clovis, Madera County, and Santa Clara County
Our pet-friendly turf installation process
- Free on-site consultation. We measure the yard, look at drainage, talk through how many dogs you have and how they use the space, and walk you through turf samples.
- Written estimate and turf selection. You get a fixed price with the specific turf product, pile height, and infill spelled out — no surprises.
- Demo and excavation. We remove existing sod, soil, or old turf and haul it off. Sprinkler heads in the area are capped at the lateral.
- Base build. Class II base or DG is brought in, graded for slope away from the house, compacted in lifts, and screeded smooth.
- Turf install. Panels are rolled out, allowed to relax, cut, seamed, and nailed. Grain direction is matched so the lawn looks uniform from the patio.
- Infill and groom. Antimicrobial zeolite infill is brushed in to support the blades and trap odors, then power-broomed to stand the fibers up.
- Walkthrough. We rinse the lawn, walk it with you, and explain simple care — rinse weekly in summer, hose off solid waste, and you’re done.
What pet-friendly artificial turf typically costs
Pet-rated synthetic turf installations in Fresno and Clovis are priced per square foot installed, and estimates range based on several factors: the square footage of the area, how much demo and haul-off is required, the turf product you choose (face weight, pile height, backing type), whether we need to address drainage with French drains or grade changes, and edge details like bender board, concrete mow strips, or paver borders. Small backyard dog runs cost less per foot than large open lawns because of edge work, but minimum job sizes apply. Premium pet-rated turf with antimicrobial infill costs more upfront than basic landscape turf, but it’s the difference between a yard that still looks and smells fresh in year five and one you’re tearing out. FAQ
Does artificial turf smell from dog urine?
Not when it’s installed correctly. The combination of a permeable backing, a properly draining base, and antimicrobial zeolite infill lets urine flow through and neutralizes ammonia. Rinsing the lawn once a week in summer keeps it fresh. The smell problems people hear about almost always come from non-permeable backings or sand infill over a poorly compacted base.
Will my dogs dig through it or pull it up?
We nail the perimeter every 4–6 inches into the compacted base, which makes edges very hard for dogs to lift. Most diggers stop trying within a few days because there’s nothing to dig — just a firm surface. For heavy diggers we can add extra perimeter anchoring at problem corners.
Does artificial turf get too hot in Fresno summers?
Synthetic turf does run warmer than real grass on 100°F+ days. We recommend lighter-colored turf for full-sun yards, and a quick rinse with the hose drops the surface temperature significantly. Shade structures, pergolas, and trees nearby also help — we can build those too.
How long does pet-friendly turf last?
Quality pet-rated turf installed over a proper base typically lasts 15–20 years in Central Valley conditions, with most manufacturers offering warranties in that range. The base is the part that determines real-world lifespan — a good base outlasts the turf itself.
Can you install turf around an existing patio, pool, or planter?
Yes. Clean transitions to concrete patios, pavers, pool coping, and planter beds are standard on our installs. We handle the masonry and hardscape in-house, so edges line up correctly.
What about cleanup — solid waste?
Pick up solids the same way you would on a real lawn, then hose the spot. For households with multiple dogs we recommend an enzyme rinse every few weeks during summer, which we’ll show you at the walkthrough.
