How to Tell If Your Drip Irrigation Is Actually Working in July Heat

By mid-July in Fresno and Clovis, afternoon highs sit north of 100 degrees for weeks at a stretch. Your drip system is running, the controller shows green, and yet a few shrubs look tired and one corner of the yard is starting to brown. Drip irrigation is efficient when it works, but it hides problems well. Emitters clog, tubing splits under mulch, and pressure drops in ways you can't see from the patio. Here's how to check whether your system is actually doing its job before you lose plants you spent real money on.

Start With a Walk-Through During a Cycle

The single most useful thing you can do is turn the system on manually and walk each zone while it runs. Most homeowners never do this. They set the controller in spring and trust it until something dies. In Central Valley summers, that's too long between check-ins.

Bring your phone, pull back mulch near a few emitters in each zone, and confirm you see water beading up or a small wet ring forming within a minute or two. If an emitter is dry, tug gently on the line to make sure it's still connected. If it's hissing or spraying, you've found a break.

Check the Wet Footprint, Not the Surface

Drip is supposed to soak in, not run off. But in Fresno's clay-heavy soils, you can get the opposite problem: water pooling on the surface and evaporating before it reaches roots. After a full cycle, wait 30 minutes, then push a long screwdriver or a soil probe into the ground six to eight inches from the emitter.

If it slides in easily to a depth of eight or ten inches, water is getting where it needs to be. If it stops at two inches, your run time is too short, your emitters are clogged, or the soil has crusted over and needs to be broken up and re-mulched.

Look for the Telltale Signs of Trouble

Certain symptoms show up again and again on service calls this time of year. A single shrub wilting while its neighbors look fine almost always means a clogged emitter or a chewed line — ground squirrels and gophers are active in Clovis and Madera County right now, and they'll bite through poly tubing to get to water.

A whole zone underperforming usually points to a pressure problem: a failed pressure regulator, a partially closed valve, or a filter packed with sediment from our hard well and canal water. If you see a wet spot in the lawn or a suspiciously green weed patch where nothing should be growing, you likely have a buried leak.

Test Your Emitters With a Simple Cup Check

You don't need special tools to verify flow rates. Grab a few plastic cups from the kitchen. Place one under an emitter at the start of a line, one in the middle, and one at the far end. Run the zone for five minutes, then compare the water levels.

They should be roughly equal. If the emitter at the end of the run has noticeably less water, you're losing pressure — often from a leak between there and the valve, or from too many emitters added to a line over the years. If one cup is empty, that emitter is clogged and needs to be cleaned or replaced. A dollar's worth of new emitters can save a $200 shrub.

Don't Ignore the Filter and Pressure Regulator

Every drip system has two small parts that do most of the work: the filter and the pressure regulator, usually mounted right at the valve. In our area, mineral content and grit clog filters faster than most homeowners expect. A filter that hasn't been cleaned in two summers is probably the reason your zone runs weak.

Shut off the water, unscrew the filter housing, rinse the screen, and reinstall it. If the mesh is torn or the regulator is more than seven or eight years old, replace them. Regulators fail silently — they still pass water, just at the wrong pressure, which cooks emitters from the inside.

Match Run Times to July Reality

Spring settings don't work in July. A schedule that kept your roses happy in May will underwater them now. As a rough starting point in Fresno heat, established shrubs on 1-gallon-per-hour emitters typically need 45 to 60 minutes, three times a week, ideally split into two shorter cycles an hour apart so water soaks in instead of running off.

Trees need longer runs, less often — an hour and a half, twice a week, with emitters placed out at the drip line rather than against the trunk. Watch the plants for a week after any schedule change and adjust from there.

When to Call for Drip Irrigation Repair in Fresno

Some problems are worth handling yourself: cleaning filters, swapping emitters, adjusting run times. Others are worth a professional look, especially if you're seeing pressure loss you can't trace, repeated failures in the same zone, or mainline leaks that require digging. A technician with a pressure gauge and a flow meter can diagnose in an hour what might take a homeowner a full weekend to chase down.

If you've worked through the checks above and something still isn't right, schedule a mid-summer system audit before the heat does more damage. Catching a bad regulator or a chewed line in July is a repair. Catching it in September, after plants are stressed, becomes a replacement job. Walk your zones this week, cup-test a few emitters, and clean your filters. That hour of attention is usually the difference between a landscape that coasts through August and one that limps into fall.
