Artificial Turf in 105-Degree Heat: What Fresno Homeowners Should Know

Every summer, we get the same question from homeowners considering synthetic grass: how hot does it actually get when the thermometer hits 105? It is a fair concern in the Central Valley, where triple-digit days stretch from June into September. The short answer is that artificial turf does get hotter than natural grass, but the gap between a comfortable lawn and an uncomfortable one comes down to product selection, infill, and how the yard is laid out. Here is what Fresno and Clovis homeowners should understand before they commit.

Why Artificial Turf Heats Up

Synthetic turf is made from plastic fibers, typically polyethylene or a blend, backed with a woven or coated material. Plastic absorbs and holds solar radiation more readily than living plants, which cool themselves through transpiration. On a 105-degree afternoon in Fresno, a natural lawn might sit around 90 to 95 degrees at the blade. An older or cheaper artificial turf, sitting in full sun, can climb to 150 degrees or higher on the surface.

That number sounds alarming, and it should be taken seriously if you have young children, dogs, or plan to walk barefoot. But surface temperature is not fixed. It responds to the specific product, the infill beneath it, the color of the fibers, and the surrounding environment.

What to Look For in a Heat-Resistant Product

Not all turf is built for Central Valley summers. When we help clients choose a product, we look at a few specific features. Lighter fiber colors reflect more sunlight than dark forest greens. Turf with a heat-reflective backing or coating, sometimes marketed as HeatBlock or a similar name, can lower peak surface temperatures by 10 to 20 degrees compared with standard products.

Fiber shape also matters. Diamond, C-shape, and W-shape blades tend to hold their form better under UV exposure and stand up straighter, which allows more airflow and less heat retention than flat, matted fibers. UV stabilization in the yarn itself is standard on quality products and helps prevent fading and brittleness over the long Fresno sun season.

The Role of Infill

Infill is the granular material brushed into the turf between the blades. It stabilizes the fibers, adds weight, and—critically for our climate—affects how the surface holds and releases heat. Standard crumb rubber, common in older installations, absorbs and radiates heat aggressively. It is not what we recommend for a residential lawn in Fresno.

Silica sand is a more neutral option and works well for most yards. For clients who want the coolest surface possible, we specify infills designed specifically to reduce heat, such as coated sand products or zeolite. Zeolite has the added benefit of absorbing pet odors, which matters if the turf is going into a dog run. These infills cost more, but on a west-facing yard with no shade, the difference is noticeable underfoot.

Shade, Layout, and Placement

The single biggest factor in how hot your turf feels is whether the sun is hitting it. A turf lawn under a mature shade tree in a Clovis backyard can stay within a few degrees of natural grass all afternoon. The same product on an unshaded south-facing slope will be significantly hotter.

When we design a yard, we think about where the turf will actually be used and when. Play areas for kids benefit from a shade sail, pergola, or placement on the east side of the house where the afternoon sun does not reach. Turf that borders a pool deck or patio also benefits from lighter-colored hardscape nearby, since dark concrete and pavers throw radiant heat onto adjacent surfaces.

Cooling Strategies That Actually Work

A quick rinse with a hose drops turf surface temperature by 30 to 50 degrees almost immediately, though the effect is temporary in dry Fresno air. For homeowners who want a more permanent solution, a simple drip or micro-spray line run around the perimeter can be set to mist the lawn for a minute or two before typical use times.

Some newer turf products incorporate hydrophilic fibers that hold moisture longer, extending the cooling effect after watering. It is worth asking about these if you have kids who will be out in the yard on summer afternoons.

When Artificial Turf Makes Sense—And When It Does Not

For a lot of Central Valley properties, synthetic turf is a smart trade. Fresno’s water rates and drought restrictions have made maintaining a large natural lawn expensive and, in some years, impractical. Turf eliminates mowing, fertilizing, and most watering, and it stays green through August when Bermuda and fescue are struggling.

That said, it is not the right choice for every yard. If your entire backyard sits in unbroken afternoon sun, has no shade structures, and will be used primarily by barefoot children or pets, we usually recommend either adding shade first or keeping a portion of the yard in a drought-tolerant living groundcover. A hybrid approach—turf for the play zone, decomposed granite paths, native plantings elsewhere—often works better than an all-turf yard.

Before you commit to a product, walk your yard at 3 p.m. on a hot day and note where the sun falls. Look at where you actually want to sit, play, or let the dog out.
